How Much Does a Psilocybin Retreat in Mexico Cost? Prices, Inclusions and What Drives Them (2026)
Quick answer
A psilocybin retreat in Mexico costs between about US$200 for a single-day group ceremony and US$10,000 or more for a week at a luxury centre. The realistic middle, where most multi-day programmes with proper screening and a medical contact sit, is US$2,000 to US$4,000 for four to seven days, all-inclusive. Our own five-day retreat in Playa del Carmen is US$1,950 per person in a shared room and US$2,300 in a private ensuite, which covers accommodation, meals, two facilitated ceremonies, yoga, breathwork, temazcal, a cenote day and a one-to-one integration call after you return home. Below is what drives the price, what is usually included and left out, and how to tell an expensive retreat from a good one.
Price ranges in Mexico in 2026
We looked at what is actually listed on the retreat marketplaces and the retreats' own sites in late 2026. Prices move, and some operators quote in euros, but the tiers are stable:
| Format | Typical price (USD) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Single-day ceremony (Tulum, Playa del Carmen) | $200 to $1,300 per person | One session, often in a group of strangers, little or no screening, no accommodation, no follow-up. |
| Private one-day "therapy session" with a facilitator | $1,200 to $2,700 | One-to-one, a preparation call and one integration call. Mostly Tulum. |
| Four- to five-day small-group retreat | $1,950 to $4,000 | Lodging, meals, one or two ceremonies, screening, integration circles, a medical contact. This is the mainstream of Mexican psilocybin retreats. |
| Seven-day retreat, Pacific coast or Valle de Bravo | $3,500 to $6,500 | Longer programme, often two to three ceremonies, more individual sessions, sometimes months of follow-up. |
| Luxury or clinical-style centre | $6,000 to $12,000+ | Boutique hotel, private rooms, clinical staff, personalised dosing. A handful exist in Tulum and Baja. |
| Private retreat for one or two people | $4,000 to $9,000 total | The programme built around you, with your own facilitators and house. |
For comparison, a general wellness retreat in Mexico without plant medicine runs US$1,200 to US$3,500 for a week, so psilocybin adds roughly 30 to 60 percent for the extra staffing, screening and smaller group.
What drives the price
- Group size. Facilitator and medical cost is roughly fixed per ceremony, so a retreat of 20 can charge less per head than one of 11, or make much more profit. Below eight guests the price per person has to rise.
- Staff ratio and who they are. Facilitators who stay with a group of eleven all night, plus a physician for the medical intake and on call, is a different cost from one guide for twenty. Retreats that pay a doctor, a nurse or a psychologist to be present reflect it in the price.
- Length and number of ceremonies. Each ceremony night needs a full team awake until dawn and a recovery day after. Two ceremonies in five days is the common format; three in seven days costs more.
- Accommodation. A boutique hotel in Tulum's beach zone is three to four times the nightly rate of a good hotel in Playa del Carmen or a house in Valle de Bravo. This is the biggest single reason Tulum retreats cost more.
- Screening and integration. A medical intake before you pay, a preparation call, and follow-up after you leave all cost staff time. Retreats that skip them are cheaper and riskier.
- Marketplace commissions. Retreat Guru and BookRetreats take a commission, which is why the same retreat is often a little more expensive on a marketplace than booked directly.
What is included, and what usually is not
Read the inclusions list before comparing two prices. Nearly every multi-day retreat includes accommodation, meals, the ceremonies, and group integration. Most include yoga, breathwork or meditation and a temazcal. Check for these, which are often missing:
- Airport transfers. Cancún to Playa del Carmen is about US$60 to $90 by private shuttle each way; to Tulum nearer US$100 to $130.
- A preparation call and a post-retreat integration call. Serious retreats include at least one of each.
- Single-occupancy rooms. The headline price is almost always the shared-room rate.
- Excursions. Cenotes, ruins and beach days are sometimes extra.
- Flights and travel insurance. Never included. Note that most travel insurance excludes harm from controlled substances, which is another reason screening matters.
One point about pricing honesty: in Mexico no retreat can legally sell psilocybin, so a well-run retreat prices the programme, lodging, meals and facilitation and assigns no price to any substance. If a site itemises "medicine" as a line item, treat it as a warning sign. Our page on the law in Mexico explains why.
Our prices, line by line
Our standard five-day psilocybin retreat in Playa del Carmen (four nights) is priced per retreat in US dollars:
| Room | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared room (two beds) | $1,950 per person | For two guests travelling together. |
| Private ensuite | $2,300 per person | The usual choice for solo guests. |
| Master room for a couple | $3,700 for two | Joining the group retreat. |
| Private retreat for two | $4,700 for two | Not part of a group; your own dates. |
Included: four nights' accommodation, all meals, two facilitated ceremonies, a day-one medical Q&A and threshold session, sunrise yoga and meditation, breathwork, temazcal and cacao ceremony, a cenote and nature activity, transport to scheduled activities, an integration guide and a one-to-one integration call after you return home. Not included: airfare, airport transfers (we can arrange one), extra hotel nights and personal purchases. Health and medication screening happens before any deposit. The New Year edition and the Mushroom + Music week are priced separately; the calendar has the current figures. Once accepted, a non-refundable deposit secures your room and the balance is due two days before the retreat; direct-booking payments can be moved as credit to any future Life Synergy retreat with no time limit. We quote the same prices on our site and, plus their commission, on the marketplaces.
Mexico vs Oregon, Jamaica and the Netherlands
- Oregon and Colorado (licensed, legal): US$1,500 to US$3,500 for a single supervised session, no lodging. A week-long package with lodging runs US$6,000 to US$10,000.
- Jamaica (legal): US$3,500 to US$8,000 for five to seven days at the established centres.
- Netherlands (truffles, tolerated): €1,500 to €4,000 for a three-day weekend, often in large groups of 15 to 25.
- Costa Rica: US$3,000 to US$7,000 for a week; fewer direct flights.
- Mexico: US$1,950 to US$4,000 for a comparable five-day small-group retreat, with direct flights from most North American and European hubs.
Mexico is cheaper for the same programme because accommodation, food and staff cost less, and because a thirteen-year-old retreat in Playa del Carmen does not have to amortise a new Tulum build. It is not cheaper because of lower standards, though cheap Mexican retreats certainly exist.
How to judge value, not just price
Ask every retreat you shortlist the same six questions and compare the answers rather than the prices:
- Who screens me, when, and what would exclude me? (The answer should include psychiatric history and specific medications, and should happen before you pay.)
- Who is medically responsible on ceremony night, and how far is the nearest hospital?
- How many guests and how many facilitators per ceremony?
- What is the dose range, and who decides?
- What happens if I have a difficult experience, and what follow-up exists after I go home?
- How long have you been running this retreat at this location, and can I speak to a past guest?
A US$1,000 one-day ceremony with no screening is not a bargain; a US$7,000 week is not automatically safer. The middle of the market, around US$2,000 to US$3,000 for five days with a small group and a medical contact, is where value usually sits. Our Mexico guide's section on comparing retreats goes through the same questions in more detail.
A realistic total budget
For a solo guest flying from the US to our Playa del Carmen retreat in a private room:
- Retreat, private ensuite: $2,300
- Return flight to Cancún: $350 to $700 from most US cities; $700 to $1,100 from Europe
- Airport transfers, Cancún to Playa del Carmen and back: $120 to $180
- An extra night before or after in Playa del Carmen: $80 to $150
- Travel insurance, tips and incidentals: $150 to $250
That gives a total of roughly US$3,000 to US$3,500 from the US and US$3,400 to US$4,000 from Europe, all in. The equivalent in Tulum's beach zone is usually US$1,500 to US$3,000 more, almost all of it accommodation; our Playa del Carmen vs Tulum article explains the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a psilocybin retreat in Mexico cost?
Most multi-day psilocybin retreats in Mexico cost US$2,000 to US$4,000 per person for four to seven days including lodging, meals, ceremonies and integration. Single-day ceremonies start around US$200 to $1,300, and luxury centres charge US$6,000 to US$12,000. Life Synergy's five-day retreat is US$1,950 to US$2,300 per person.
Why are Tulum psilocybin retreats more expensive than Playa del Carmen?
Accommodation. Tulum's beach-zone boutique hotels cost three to four times a comparable hotel in Playa del Carmen, and Tulum retreats are mostly newer businesses still paying off their build. The programme itself, facilitators, screening and medical cover, costs the same in both towns.
Is a cheaper retreat less safe?
Not necessarily, but very cheap offers usually save money on exactly the things that keep you safe: screening, staff ratio and medical cover. Judge a retreat on the answers to the six questions above, then on price.
Does the price include the mushrooms?
At a reputable Mexican retreat, no price is assigned to any substance; the fee covers the programme, lodging, meals and facilitation. Retreats that itemise "medicine" are advertising a sale that Mexican law does not permit.
Can I pay in instalments?
Most retreats, including ours, take a deposit to hold the place and the balance shortly before arrival, and will agree a payment schedule if you ask. Screening is completed before any deposit so you never pay for a retreat you cannot attend.
Is a psilocybin retreat covered by insurance or HSA/FSA?
No. Psilocybin retreats are wellness programmes, not medical treatment, and no insurer or HSA/FSA plan covers them. Travel insurance also generally excludes harm arising from controlled substances.
